Maratonina di Mestre 2026: 13 September Routes, 9:30 Start & ACTV Disruptions

If you are staying in Mestre on Sunday morning, this is both a local event worth knowing about and a transport detail worth planning around. The Maratonina is centred on Piazza Ferretto and uses a largely cycleway and pedestrian-route network through parks and neighbourhoods on the Venice mainland. That keeps much of the event away from ordinary road traffic, but it does not make the morning transport-neutral: ACTV has published a specific warning for buses and trams, including a short diversion for Line 2.

01 · What is happening and where

The Maratonina di Mestre returns for its 17th edition on Sunday 13 September. The official city listing gives a 09:30 start, with both the start and finish in Piazza Erminio Ferretto, the main pedestrian square in central Mestre. The event is organised by Maratonella ASD and forms part of the Comune’s Le Città in Festa programme.

Despite the name, visitors should not picture a conventional 21.1 km half-marathon with one closed-road racing course. The confirmed options are 6 km, 11 km and 19 km, and the city describes the event as deliberately inclusive: runners, walkers, families, children and people with dogs on leads are all part of the intended audience. The organiser’s 19 km page also emphasises that the route is designed around participant safety without a total traffic shutdown.

02 · The three routes show off a different side of Venice

The Comune says roughly 90% of the routes use cycle paths and pedestrian/cycle paths. The courses pass through parts of historic Mestre and the mainland green network, including Parco Albanese, Bosco dell’Osellino, Parco San Giuliano and Forte Marghera, with sections reaching the edge of the Venetian Lagoon.

The 6 km option is the short route and is promoted as the family-friendly choice. The 11 km shares part of the longer course. The 19 km is the fullest version, using sections of the traditional Maratonina route with variations through Parco Albanese and Parco San Giuliano. For travellers who have only seen San Marco and the islands, this is a very different Venice: canals give way to parks, fortifications, neighbourhood streets and the mainland-lagoon edge.

If you plan to participate rather than watch, use the organiser’s route-specific pages for the current rules and registration links. Do not rely on the word “Maratonina” as shorthand for a standard half-marathon distance.

03 · Piazza Ferretto becomes the event base from 08:00

The organiser says the Maratonina Expo Village will operate in Piazza Ferretto from 08:00 until about 13:00, extending towards Via Rosa. The square is the event’s start, finish and logistical base, with music, activities, sports associations, community groups and sponsor stands planned for the morning.

The main organiser page also says Sunday registration activity will operate in Piazza Ferretto from 08:00 until the end of the event. Packet and bib collection is additionally advertised at Ca’ Mestre on Friday and Saturday in two windows, 10:00–12:00 and 15:00–19:00. Same-day plans can change, so anyone intending to run or walk should still check the official registration link before travelling to the square rather than assuming a particular route remains available.

04 · ACTV warns of bus and tram disruption from 09:30 to 12:30

This is the part non-participants should pay most attention to. AVM/Actv says that many streets in central Mestre will be affected between 09:30 and 12:30 on Sunday. Buses and trams may be temporarily stopped for the time needed for participants to pass.

There is also one specific published diversion: from 09:25 to 09:45, Line 2 Sturzo–Venezia is diverted. From Via San Donà it runs via Via Ca’ Rossa, Via Colombo, Piazza 27 Ottobre, Via Olivi and Via Carducci before rejoining its normal route around the Circonvallazione Miranese–Piave junction; the reverse applies from Venice. ACTV says the stops along the temporary route will be served.

That is a relatively short formal diversion, but the broader warning matters more: temporary holds can ripple into journey times. If you have a train from Venezia Mestre, an airport transfer, a cruise or a timed museum booking in Venice, allow a buffer rather than planning a tight connection through central Mestre late Sunday morning.

05 · What this means if you are visiting Mestre but not joining

Piazza Ferretto should be livelier than a normal Sunday morning, with the event village, start/finish activity and participants moving through the centre. If you enjoy local events, this is a good excuse to see Mestre as more than a place to sleep on the mainland. Arriving before the 09:30 start gives you the atmosphere without needing to chase the course.

If your priority is simply getting to Venice, treat 09:30–12:30 as a period when surface transport in Mestre may be less predictable. Walking to Venezia Mestre railway station can be a practical alternative for some central-Mestre stays, but only if it suits your luggage, mobility and exact hotel location. Otherwise, leave earlier and follow real-time ACTV information rather than trying to outguess a temporary hold.

06 · Thinking of joining? Choose the distance first

The event’s three distances make it unusually accessible for a visitor who did not travel to Venice specifically for a race. The 6 km route is the lowest-commitment option; 11 km gives more of the mainland course; 19 km reaches further into the parks and lagoon-edge landscape. The Comune describes the event as open to a broad public, not only dedicated runners.

Before turning up, check the organiser’s current registration page and route regulations. The official site is still showing registrations open at the time of our 12 September check, but availability, collection arrangements and any route-specific requirements can change close to start time. If you are already registered, organise your bib/packet timing and transport before Sunday morning so the 09:30 start is not your first deadline of the day.

07 · The event has a strong local charity focus

The city and organiser both frame the Maratonina as a community event as much as a sporting one. Part of the proceeds is directed to three local organisations in 2026: AVAPO Mestre, AVIS Mestre e Zelarino and LILT Venezia. The route itself reinforces that local focus by moving through Mestre’s parks, neighbourhoods and Forte Marghera rather than staging the event around Venice’s most photographed historic-centre landmarks.

For travellers, that context matters. This is not a tourist spectacle imported into the destination; it is a mainland-Venice community morning that visitors can either join or simply plan around respectfully.

08 · Before you go on Sunday morning

• If you are participating: re-check the organiser’s registration and route page, plus your bib/packet collection instructions.
• If you are using ACTV: allow extra time between 09:30 and 12:30 and check live service information before leaving.
• If you use Line 2: note the published 09:25–09:45 diversion around the start period.
• If you are spectating: Piazza Ferretto is the simplest base because it hosts both the start/finish and Expo Village.
• If you have a hard deadline: do not build a train, airport or timed-entry connection around the best-case surface-transport time.
