The Regata di Burano starts at 15:00, with seven traditional rowing categories scheduled through the afternoon. Because the race course uses the Burano–Torcello channel, AVM/Actv is limiting or suspending parts of lines 9, 12, 13 and 14. If you are visiting Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Treporti or Punta Sabbioni on Sunday, check the temporary timetable before you leave.

This is both a local tradition worth seeing and a genuine transport disruption worth planning around. The racing starts near the Burano ACTV landing and moves along the Canale di Burano, with turning points towards San Felice and Torcello. That puts the event directly across routes normally used by public boats, so the changes are more substantial than a simple delayed departure.

Regatta: Sunday 20 September, first race 15:00; final men’s gondola race scheduled 18:15. Line 9: suspended after Burano 14:15 / Torcello 14:10. Line 12: major Burano/Treporti changes from about 14:00 into the evening, with Mazzorbo and Torcello used as temporary operating points. Line 13: two afternoon trips are limited to Punta Vela. Line 14: several Punta Sabbioni–Burano trips are limited to Treporti and five Burano departures towards Punta Sabbioni/San Marco are suspended. Normal service resumes after the races, subject to delays.

01 · The Regata di Burano closes Venice’s 2026 rowing season

The Comune di Venezia’s 2026 race roster confirms the Regata di Burano for Sunday 20 September. It is the final major appointment in the municipal rowing season and has long been described locally as a kind of “rematch” after the Regata Storica.

The official race roles start at 15:00 with Schie on two-oared mascarete, followed by Maciarele Junior at 15:20, Maciarele Senior at 15:40, Giovanissime at 16:00, Giovanissimi on pupparini at 16:45, Women on pupparini at 17:30 and Men on two-oared gondole at 18:15. That schedule explains why the transport restrictions occupy much of the afternoon.

02 · Why the vaporetto network has to move around the race

The published Burano race course starts close to the Burano ACTV pontoon, runs along the Canale di Burano, turns near the junction with the Canale di San Felice, returns through the channel, turns again at Torcello and finishes back at Burano.

That is precisely the water used by everyday public transport around Burano and Torcello. The resulting ACTV plan temporarily shifts some services to Mazzorbo and Torcello, shortens others and suspends several Burano legs while racing is under way.

03 · Line 9 stops after the 14:15 Burano departure

ACTV says Line 9’s last departure from Burano is 14:15 and its last departure from Torcello is 14:10, after which the service is suspended for the regatta.

The Torcello connection is shifted to Mazzorbo and integrated with Line 12. If you normally treat Line 9 as the simple five-minute Burano–Torcello shuttle, Sunday afternoon is not the time to rely on the normal pattern.

04 · Line 12 has the biggest set of changes

From 14:00 to 18:10, Line 12 services leaving Fondamente Nove for Burano that reach Mazzorbo continue to Torcello instead; they do not continue to Burano and Treporti in the normal way. ACTV publishes temporary return departures from Torcello via Mazzorbo towards Fondamente Nove.

Two later departures from Fondamente Nove are also limited: the 17:40 trip terminates at Torcello and returns at 18:30, while the 18:10 trip terminates at Torcello and returns at 19:00.

ACTV separately suspends Treporti → Burano from 14:41 to 18:40 and Burano → Treporti from 14:45 to 18:53. Between 14:55 and 18:25, the Burano terminus for services towards Fondamente Nove is shifted to Mazzorbo, with a dedicated Mazzorbo–Torcello shuttle operating in both directions.

05 · Line 13 is shortened around Sant’Erasmo and Treporti

On Line 13, the 16:45 and 17:25 departures from Fondamente Nove towards Sant’Erasmo / Treporti are limited to Punta Vela.

In the opposite direction, the 17:45 and 18:25 departures from Treporti instead start from Punta Vela at 17:58 and 18:38. Anyone using Sant’Erasmo or Treporti should treat these specific trips as changed rather than assuming the whole line is suspended.

06 · Line 14 loses several Burano legs

ACTV says the Line 14 departures from Punta Sabbioni for Burano at 13:55, 14:55, 15:55, 16:55 and 17:55 are limited to Treporti, where the boats turn back towards Punta Sabbioni at 14:42, 15:42, 16:42, 17:42 and 18:42.

The operator also suspends the Burano → Punta Sabbioni → San Marco–San Zaccaria “A” departures at 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30 and 18:30. For visitors approaching Burano from the Punta Sabbioni side, this is one of the easiest changes to miss if you are working from a saved normal timetable.

07 · When does normal service come back?

ACTV says normal Line 12 service is expected to resume after the racing, provided the regatta is not delayed. It lists the first regularising departures as Fondamente Nove → Burano at 18:40, Burano → Fondamente Nove at 19:25, Burano → Treporti at 19:23, Treporti → Burano at 19:10, Burano → Torcello at 19:25 and Torcello → Burano at 19:18.

The “subject to race delays” wording matters. If you have an evening train, airport connection or timed reservation, do not build your plan around a theoretical first normal boat with no buffer.

08 · What to know if you actually want to watch the regatta

The first race is scheduled for 15:00 and the final men’s gondola race for 18:15. The course runs through the Burano channel towards Torcello, so spectators on the island can see traditional Venetian rowing in the same waters that normally carry the island’s public transport.

If your main objective is the race rather than a normal sightseeing day, arrive well before the first start. The transport restrictions begin before 15:00, and leaving Burano during the racing window is deliberately harder. The best plan is to treat the regatta as the centrepiece of the afternoon rather than something to squeeze between tightly timed island stops.

09 · A practical Sunday plan

  • Check ACTV on Sunday morning: race timing can move, and the operator’s live notice is the final transport authority.
  • Do not assume Burano–Torcello Line 9 runs normally: it stops after the early-afternoon departures.
  • Use Mazzorbo deliberately: several Line 12 services shift there during the regatta, and Burano is connected to Mazzorbo by a pedestrian bridge.
  • Protect onward travel: if a missed boat would cost you a train, flight or reservation, leave a larger buffer than usual.
  • If you are going for the race: arrive before 15:00 and expect the island’s transport pattern to stay abnormal until after the final events.
